There is an ideological war of words waging in America. The Power of Narrative: Climate Skepticism and the Deconstruction of Science, released October 1, 2020 by coauthors are Raul P. Lejano and CAL Board of Trustee, Shondel J. Nero, pulls from science and technology studies, narrative and discourse theory, and public policy to examine the strength of climate skepticism as a story, offering a thoughtful analysis and comparison of anti-climate science narratives over time and across geographic boundaries.

"I was teaching abroad to non-native English learners. As with so many other teacher, when the pandemic struck it threw my life into chaos. It is one thing to end the school year online, but it's another to START building relationships from scratch through a screen! Let me just say, the Professional Development Team at the Center for Applied Linguistics did not take the easy route and gloss over these issues: the whole world is going virtual, and CAL is leaning in."

$10 Million Grant to Move Middle and High School Instruction Beyond Language

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has awarded the University of Houston (UH) a multi-year, $10 million grant to establish a national research and development center for English learners at the University’s Texas Institute for Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistics (TIMES). The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is one of six other key investigative partners subcontracted by the UH to provide outreach and leadership support, including hosting an annual conference to build the national, regional and local infrastructure in disseminating and encouraging the adoption of research-based policies.
