Lindsey Massoud is a Senior Research Associate at CAL in the PreK-12 English Learner (EL) Education program area. Ms. Massoud currently works with the Education Connections team, through grants funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education’s Investing in Innovation (i3) fund.
Since 2009, Ms. Massoud has worked at CAL in the areas of K-12 EL education, curriculum development, vocabulary instruction, classroom technology use for ELs, test development, online learning, culturally responsive instruction, and teacher professional development. She has conducted qualitative and quantitative research through semi-structured interviews, online surveys, and discourse analysis. Ms. Massoud is also a co-author on the CAL Practitioner Brief: Implementing the Common Core for English Learners: Responding to Common Questions.
Prior to coming to CAL, Ms. Massoud conducted video ethnography of middle school science classrooms, describing students’ participation in highly-rated science curriculum units through discourse analysis, with particular attention to students’ appropriation of scientific language and the interdiscursive relationships between the curriculum and students’ actions in the classroom.
Ms. Massoud holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology from the George Washington University, with an emphasis on Linguistic and Social Anthropology, and a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her master’s thesis focused on learning in informal settings and the relationship between music and language, through an ethnography of a bluegrass jam community in the Washington, DC area.
CAL is partnering with the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department (MMED) of Los Angeles Unified School District (L.A. Unified) to collaborate on a new English Learner Master Plan for the district.
The project will customize an online platform (Oba) to enhance traditional approaches to professional development (PD) through teacher networks.
CAL is partnering with the Institute for Global and Online Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, on this two-year project to provide support for secondary teachers working to implement the Common Core with English learners.
Education Connections is an initiative of the Center for Applied Linguistics funded by three grants to provide free professional development for teachers regarding improved implementation of sheltered instructional methods to better meet the needs of English learner students in standards-based, mainstream education settings.
