Fundamentals of Sheltered Instruction: Featuring the
SIOP Model

This self-paced online course is designed to help teachers and administrators increase their knowledge of research-based sheltered instruction to support the language and content learning needs of English learners. Examples are based on the widely-used and effective SIOP Model.

This issue of the CAL SIOP Bulletin is focused on systems of support to help schools and districts provide ongoing support to the teachers implementing the SIOP Model. Systems of support can include Language Instruction Education Programs (LIEP), Professional Learning Communities (PLC), coaching, and other job-embedded professional development.

Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners book coverAn Insider’s Guide to SIOP Coaching
This valuable resource is designed for teacher educators, staff developers, and other stakeholders who know the SIOP Model and are helping school districts implement it in their lessons. The guide was developed to share best practices for coaching teachers in using the SIOP Model; help school districts develop their own professional development models that empower teachers; promote the development of professional learning communities within a school; and help teachers support student learning.

CAL SIOP Training of Trainers Institutes

CAL offers two strands of SIOP TOT Institutes to best meet the needs of educators. We have set dates through fall 2016. Check out our CAL Institutes calendar for more information.

SIOP TOT I: Foundations is designed to help participants enhance their knowledge of the SIOP Model to support delivery of effective professional development workshops for educators. This institute is designed for those with a basic knowledge of the SIOP Model and seek foundational skills in creating and delivering a SIOP Model professional development program.

SIOP TOT II: Advanced Strategies focuses on strategies and techniques to provide job-embedded support, such as coaching, to help teachers more effectively implement the SIOP Model. This institute is designed for those who have foundational skills in delivering SIOP Model professional development, and who currently support educators in districts and schools where SIOP is being implemented.
