Early Childhood Activities

These new activities from CAL SIOP focus on promoting interaction and academic language development in the early childhood classroom.

Anticipation Guide Activity: Field Trip to the Farm
This anticipation guide fosters peer to peer interaction and provides a concrete way for students to make predictions as to what they will see on a field trip and develop oral language proficiency. It supports the Building Background and Strategies components of the SIOP Model. Included in this activity are materials for the teacher to cut out and use in a pocket chart.

Shapes Information Gap Activity
The information gap activity fosters meaningful interaction around key vocabulary and content concepts. It provides students with practice on oral language, shapes, and colors.

Sentences from Boxes Activity
The sentences from boxes activity provides students with scaffolding in order to write sentences.  It uses the same shapes and colors from the information gap and can be used as a follow up activity.
