CAL SIOP Professional Development Services
The CAL SIOP team collaborates with schools, states, and districts to design and conduct SIOP Model professional development programs to meet their particular needs. Based on requests by districts and schools, CAL has developed SIOP workshops designed for specific grade level and/or content areas with a recent focus on delivering professional development services to PK-5 teachers.

We can also complement SIOP teacher workshops with coaching and lesson study services to assist teachers as they learn to incorporate the features of the SIOP Model into their lesson design and delivery.

CREATE: Project QuEST Lesson Plan Units and Materials
CAL was a partner in the Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners (CREATE). Conducted as part of CREATE’s multi-year program of research, Project QuEST (Quality English and Science Teaching) investigated a systematic intervention to concurrently develop science content knowledge and language and literacy skills in middle school English learners. An overview of QuEST curricular materials, as well as seventh grade science lesson plan materials on ecology, cycles, and genetics are available online as free, downloadable PDFs. These materials, many of which highlight SIOP techniques demonstrated in CAL SIOP workshops, can either be used in their entirety or can be adapted to fit your specific instructional context.

To learn more and download the materials, visit Project QuEST on the CREATE website.

Developing Academic Language in English Language Learners Through Sheltered Instruction
This article, co-authored by one of SIOP co-founders Deborah Short, describes a study examining the effects of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model instruction on the academic language performance of middle and high school English language learners. Using a quasi-experimental design, the research was conducted in content area and English as a second language classes in two districts in northern New Jersey over 2 years. The results from this study further demonstrate how SIOP Model professional development can improve the quality of instruction to English learners and increase their English language achievement.

Visit the TESOL Quarterly website where members can read the full article.

CREATE Brief: Effective Practices for Increasing the Achievement of English Learners
This research brief highlights two schools’ efforts to improve the achievement of their students using the SIOP Model. These schools, one elementary and one secondary, have seen significant improvement in the performance of their English learners through the use of the SIOP Model of instruction, an approach that addresses both academic language development and access to content. The brief outlines how each school has implemented the model and supported teachers through job-embedded professional development.
